Ingredients
Cake:
3 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for pans)
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup unsalted butter, room temp
1 cup granulated sugar
4 egg whites, room temp
2 tsp clear vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups buttermilk or whole milk
Red and blue gel food coloring
Buttercream:
2 cups unsalted butter, room temp
6–8 cups powdered sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup heavy cream
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup patriotic sprinkles
Instructions
Grease and flour three 8 or 9-inch cake pans.
Mix dry ingredients in a bowl.
Beat butter and sugar until fluffy.
Add egg whites and vanilla.
Fold in dry ingredients and buttermilk.
Divide batter and color red, blue, and leave one plain.
Bake at 350°F for 25 mins. Cool completely.
Beat butter for frosting, add sugar, cream, vanilla, and salt.
Stack layers with frosting, chill crumb coat, frost and decorate.
Notes
Use gel colors for vibrant tones. Chill before final frosting. Cake layers can be made ahead and frozen. Add berries for freshness.
